Motion:

President Trump should be impeached, and proceedings should begin immediately.

Debaters:

Dawn Blake will be arguing the "pro" side. She is 37 years old. She has degrees in Criminal Justice, Forensic Psychology, and am currently working on an MSW. She volunteers for the Red Cross, where she has been on three national disaster deployments. She considers herself an Independent.

Elie Rosen will be arguing the "con" side. He is 26, from New York, but currently residing in Maryland. He works for a defense contractor. He is still a registered Democrat but intends to change party registration this coming year.

Opening, Pro:

Trump.

Why is he still president? Why?

According to The New York Times (quoting the Constitution), impeachment can begin if there is reason to believe that they have committed “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors” (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/17/us/politics/how-the-impeachment-process-works-trump-clinton.html?mcubz=3). This guy couldn’t tell you the truth if his life depended on it, and people are still eating it up more than the best tasting pizza on the planet. Right now I’m watching his Phoenix speech, and I cannot count how many times I want to "face-palm" watching this [the moderator apologizes for the delay in presentation of this debate]

Simply put, he is a joke, he has made us a laughingstock, and he has shown -  again and again – that mentally he is NOT fit to sit in the Oval Office. I can only hope and pray that he is out of office soon.

Opening, Con:

We’re now into the eight month of Trump’s presidency and there’s no sign of him slowing down. Despite all of his successes so far, this still has not stopped just about every Democrat from demanding for Trump’s impeachment (http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/12/politics/kfile-democrats-impeach-trump/index.html).

Even with this overabundance of those who wish for Trump to be impeached, the fact of the matter is it’s just not going to happen. The rationale behind my opinion is simple-- Trump is just not the big mean guy that everyone makes him out to be. In fact he’s quite the opposite; instead the media just constantly likes to flip his words to make it seem like he’s a monster out destroying the country. At the end of the day, Trump has not committed any crimes since being in office that would be deemed worthy of an impeachment hearing. Those who think Russia will lead to his demise are also quite mistaken. Despite the current investigation is into his campaign, of which Trump is personally not being investigated and whatever the outcome of that investigation may be, there are no crimes against “colluding” with a foreign government during a campaign.

Rebuttal, Pro:

Trump and “successes” don’t belong in the same library, much less in the same sentence. What actual quantifiable successes has he had? Even with the GOP in charge of Congress, was he able to do anything about the Affordable Care Act? NOPE! All he’s managed to be successful at is playing “musical White House staff”, going over the heads of his military commanders to discriminate against transgender military members, insisting that “there was violence on many sides” in Charlottesville, having one of the lowest approval rates of any president, and playing keyboard warrior on Twitter.

As far as the media “flipping his words”, um…he legit spits out nothing but word salad whenever he’s in front of a camera. They don’t have to flip his words to make him look ridiculous – he’s able to manage that just fine on his own.

Rebuttal, Con:

There is no obligation for the president to be truthful while speaking in public. In fact, I find the way he speaks to be more his winning strategy overall, i.e. “The art of the deal”. While many would expect that the president be truthful at all times, I find that more often than not, his “lies” that the media complain about are more so just broader exaggerations that they claim are inaccurate, when all Trump did was just round numbers up. Trump is a brander and him speaking with larger numbers does overall impress his base. People should spend more time breaking down his message into the main points he’s projecting and it will be obvious to see that what he does is for the American people and not padding his pockets.
